Guide for the First Time Floater

What is Floating?

Like many people in Vancouver, you’ve probably heard of float tanks or sensory deprivation by now. If not and you’re discovering this therapy on your own accord, even better! A question we’ve been answering daily for the last three years and one that likely brought you to this page – What is floating and why do people do it?
Flotation therapy, also known as sensory deprivation is a relaxation therapy you truly need to experience to understand how it can enhance your life.
By entering one of our luxurious float pods, your brain no longer needs to process light, sound, gravity, or even moderate your body temperature. For one hour your body is weightless, floating in water with over 800lbs of Epsom Salt dissolved into it. The combination of darkness, silence, and body temperature weightlessness creates the perfect environment for restoration and rejuvenation. Through this practice, you can expect a variety of benefits for the mind, body and soul.

What to Expect:

At Metta³ Rest Spa we do our best to anticipate your needs. Upon arrival guests will be checked in, sign a waiver, debriefed about the float session, and given a tour of the spa facility. Following the tour guests will be escorted to the ladies/ gentleman changing room and then have access to the additional spa facilities; Far-infrared Sauna, library, and if unoccupied the Yoga Sanctuary.
*Sauna is best suited before flotation rest sessions as showers are only accessible immediately before and after flotation session.

Lockers, towels, robes, and comfy sandals are all provided. Everyone is required to shower both prior to and after the Flotation REST session. Guests are provided natural products shampoo/ conditioner, body wash, and moisturizers.
Following your session, the library beckons to enjoy a cup of tea, curl up with a good book by the fire, and bask in the afterglow of your REST.

The Many Benefits of Flotation Therapy

True Body

Inside the tank, amplified circulation throughout your body leads to muscle relaxation and an overall reduction in natural cortisol production. You’ll discover increased visual acuity and other amplified senses due to the reduction in inbound information.

Only 25% of North American’s get the recommended amount of magnesium. A session in the float tank will correct that due to the high concentration of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) inside each of our units. This is great news as magnesium can regulate blood pressure, assist in detox and assists in prevention of other common cardiovascular diseases.

Through the consistent use of float tanks, guests have reported significant improvements in their experience of pain with ailments such as tendinitis, bursitis, inflammation, arthritis, PTSD and general soreness.

Brain State

Mental stimulation and activity is the norm in the western world. Yet monks dedicate their lives seeking stillness and control. Inside the tank you will have the opportunity to be completely undistracted, alone with your thoughts’.  With practice your brain will cycle through Alpha, Beta and ultimately to the Theta brainwave patterns. A very lucid and powerful place to be!

Regular floating and other mindfulness practices can alter points in the endocrine homeostatic mechanism which can cause adjustments such as lower adrenal activation threshold. Simplified, this means you train your body and biochemistry to be more resistant to releasing stress hormones.

With the absence of external distractions, you have the opportunity to truly be with yourself and experience pure thought.
